A-List Resource

Healthy Schools Snacks
The John C. Stalker Institute of Food and Nutrition is pleased to offer you The A-List, an updated and ever-expanding list of vending and snack products that meet the Massachusetts A La Carte Food & Beverage Standards to Promote a Healthier School Environment (Massachusetts Standards).

Massachusetts Action for Healthy Kids first published these nutrition standards in 2004 as guidelines for schools to use in choosing competitive foods. They were then updated in 2007. Click here for the updated Massachusetts Standards.

In 2005, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics voted to endorse the Standards.

Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) is a nationwide initiative dedicated to improving the health and educational performance of children through better nutrition and physical activity in schools.

What is the A-List?
To assist school personnel in their efforts to improve the nutrition environment in their schools, the John C. Stalker Institute of Food and Nutrition (JSI) assessed many products and compared them to the Standards. Products that meet the Standards are included on the list of "A-cceptable" products, also known as the A-List. This list will expand as new products are introduced to the marketplace by food companies. The list will be updated.

Please share this list with other groups in your school and school district. The list is useful to anyone in the school who makes decisions about what food to offer the school community. We encourage you to use this information to create an environment of health and wellness for the children in your school.
